In extraordinarily general terms, there are three basic tactics used. You need to be able to hop between strategies quickly as the course of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This involves creating a 6-deep wall of checkers, or at a minimum as deep as you might manage, to block in the opponent’s pieces that are on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most suitable tactic at the begining of the match. You can assemble the wall anywhere inbetween your 11-point and your 2-point and then shuffle it into your home board as the game progresses.

The Blitz

This is composed of closing your home board as quickly as possible while keeping your competitor on the bar. e.g., if your challenger rolls an early two and moves one checker from your one-point to your 3-point and you then roll a 5-5, you are able to play 6/1 6/1 eight/three 8/3. Your opposer is now in big-time trouble considering that they have two pieces on the bar and you have closed half your inside board!

The Backgame

This plan is where you have 2 or more anchors in your opponent’s inner board. (An anchor is a position consisting of at a minimum 2 of your checkers.) It should be employed when you are significantly behind as it greatly improves your circumstances. The strongest locations for anchors are close to your opponent’s lower points and also on adjacent points or with a single point in between. Timing is integral for a powerful backgame: after all, there’s no reason having two nice anchor spots and a solid wall in your own home board if you are then required to break apart this right away, while your challenger is getting their pieces home, seeing that you don’t have any other extra pieces to move! In this case, it is more favorable to have pieces on the bar so that you can maintain your position up until your opponent gives you a chance to hit, so it will be a great idea to attempt and get your opposer to get them in this situation!
