In astonishingly general terms, there are three basic game plans employed. You want to be able to switch game plans instantly as the action of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This is comprised of creating a 6-thick wall of checkers, or at least as thick as you are able to achieve, to lock in the competitor’s pieces that are on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most suitable procedure at the begining of the game. You can assemble the wall anywhere within your 11-point and your two-point and then move it into your home board as the match progresses.

The Blitz

This consists of locking your home board as fast as as you can while keeping your opposer on the bar. For example, if your competitor tosses an early 2 and moves one checker from your one-point to your three-point and you then roll a 5-5, you will be able to play 6/1 six/one 8/3 eight/three. Your challenger is now in big-time calamity because they have two pieces on the bar and you have closed half your inside board!

The Backgame

This course of action is where you have 2 or higher pieces in your opponent’s inner board. (An anchor is a point consisting of at a minimum two of your checkers.) It should be played when you are significantly behind as this plan much improves your chances. The best areas for anchors are close to your competitor’s lower points and either on abutting points or with a single point in between. Timing is critical for a competent backgame: after all, there’s no reason having 2 nice anchors and a complete wall in your own home board if you are then required to break down this right away, while your challenger is shifting their pieces home, seeing that you do not have any other extra checkers to shift! In this case, it is more tolerable to have pieces on the bar so that you might preserve your position until your opponent gives you an opportunity to hit, so it can be an excellent idea to try and get your opposer to hit them in this situation!
