In exceptionally general terms, there are three basic strategies employed. You want to be able to hop between techniques quickly as the course of the game unfolds.
The Blockade
This consists of building a 6-deep wall of pieces, or at least as thick as you can achieve, to barricade in the opponent’s pieces that are located on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most acceptable procedure at the start of the match. You can build the wall anywhere between your 11-point and your 2-point and then move it into your home board as the game advances.
The Blitz
This is composed of locking your home board as quickly as as you can while keeping your competitor on the bar. e.g., if your challenger rolls an early 2 and shifts one checker from your 1-point to your three-point and you then roll a five-five, you can play six/one 6/1 eight/three eight/three. Your competitor is now in serious dire straits taking into account that they have 2 checkers on the bar and you have locked half your inner board!
The Backgame
This course of action is where you have 2 or higher anchors in your opponent’s inner board. (An anchor is a point filled by at a minimum two of your pieces.) It would be played when you are decidedly behind as it much improves your opportunities. The better areas for anchor spots are close to your opponent’s smaller points and also on abutting points or with a single point in between. Timing is critical for an effective backgame: at the end of the day, there is no reason having two nice anchors and a solid wall in your own inner board if you are then required to break up this right away, while your opposer is shifting their checkers home, seeing that you don’t have any other additional pieces to shift! In this situation, it is better to have pieces on the bar so that you might maintain your position until your challenger provides you an opportunity to hit, so it can be a wonderful idea to try and get your opposer to get them in this case!
