In astonishingly general terms, there are three general tactics used. You need to be agile enough to switch game plans quickly as the action of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This is composed of building a 6-thick wall of pieces, or at least as thick as you might manage, to barricade in the competitor’s pieces that are located on your 1-point. This is considered to be the most suitable course of action at the begining of the match. You can create the wall anyplace inbetween your eleven-point and your 2-point and then move it into your home board as the game progresses.

The Blitz

This is comprised of locking your home board as fast as possible while keeping your competitor on the bar. e.g., if your competitor tosses an early 2 and shifts one piece from your one-point to your 3-point and you then toss a five-five, you can play six/one 6/1 8/3 8/3. Your challenger is now in big-time dire straits because they have 2 pieces on the bar and you have locked half your inside board!

The Backgame

This strategy is where you have two or higher anchors in your competitor’s home board. (An anchor is a position consisting of at a minimum 2 of your pieces.) It would be employed when you are extremely behind as it greatly improves your chances. The better places for anchors are towards your competitor’s lower points and also on abutting points or with a single point in between. Timing is critical for an effectual backgame: after all, there is no point having two nice anchor spots and a solid wall in your own inner board if you are then required to break down this straight away, while your challenger is moving their pieces home, taking into account that you do not have other additional pieces to move! In this situation, it’s more favorable to have checkers on the bar so that you can maintain your position up till your competitor provides you an opportunity to hit, so it may be a wonderful idea to try and get your competitor to get them in this situation!
