In astonishingly general terms, there are 3 general techniques used. You must be agile enough to hop between techniques instantly as the course of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This consists of assembling a 6-thick wall of checkers, or at a minimum as deep as you can achieve, to barricade in your opponent’s pieces that are located on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most adequate tactic at the start of the match. You can create the wall anywhere inbetween your eleven-point and your two-point and then shift it into your home board as the match continues.

The Blitz

This is comprised of closing your home board as quickly as as you can while keeping your challenger on the bar. i.e., if your opponent rolls an early two and moves one checker from your one-point to your three-point and you then roll a five-five, you will be able to play 6/1 6/1 eight/three 8/3. Your challenger is now in big-time dire straits because they have 2 checkers on the bar and you have closed half your home board!

The Backgame

This plan is where you have two or higher checkers in your competitor’s inner board. (An anchor is a position occupied by at a minimum 2 of your checkers.) It must be used when you are extremely behind as this plan much improves your chances. The best places for anchors are towards your opponent’s lower points and also on adjacent points or with a single point in between. Timing is integral for a competent backgame: besides, there is no reason having 2 nice anchors and a complete wall in your own home board if you are then required to dismantle this right away, while your challenger is moving their pieces home, owing to the fact that you don’t have any other extra checkers to shift! In this case, it’s better to have checkers on the bar so that you might preserve your position up until your challenger gives you an opportunity to hit, so it will be a great idea to attempt and get your opposer to hit them in this situation!
