In extraordinarily simple terms, there are 3 general plans used. You want to be able to switch strategies almost instantly as the course of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This is composed of assembling a 6-deep wall of pieces, or at least as deep as you can achieve, to barricade in your competitor’s pieces that are on your 1-point. This is judged to be the most adequate tactic at the start of the match. You can create the wall anywhere within your 11-point and your two-point and then shift it into your home board as the match continues.

The Blitz

This consists of closing your home board as quickly as as you can while keeping your competitor on the bar. For example, if your opponent rolls an early 2 and moves one checker from your one-point to your three-point and you then toss a 5-5, you are able to play 6/1 six/one 8/3 eight/three. Your competitor is now in big-time trouble since they have two checkers on the bar and you have closed half your inside board!

The Backgame

This strategy is where you have 2 or higher anchors in your competitor’s inner board. (An anchor spot is a point consisting of at least two of your pieces.) It should be played when you are extremely behind as this action greatly improves your chances. The better locations for anchor spots are close to your competitor’s lower points and also on abutting points or with a single point separating them. Timing is crucial for a competent backgame: at the end of the day, there is no reason having two nice anchor spots and a complete wall in your own home board if you are then forced to break up this straight away, while your opponent is moving their pieces home, taking into account that you do not have other additional checkers to shift! In this situation, it is more favorable to have checkers on the bar so that you can preserve your position until your opposer gives you a chance to hit, so it will be an excellent idea to attempt and get your competitor to hit them in this case!
