In extraordinarily general terms, there are 3 fundamental game plans used. You need to be agile enough to switch techniques almost instantly as the course of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This is comprised of building a 6-deep wall of checkers, or at least as deep as you can manage, to block in the opponent’s checkers that are on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most suitable course of action at the start of the match. You can create the wall anywhere within your 11-point and your two-point and then move it into your home board as the game advances.

The Blitz

This involves closing your home board as fast as as you can while keeping your challenger on the bar. i.e., if your competitor tosses an early 2 and shifts one piece from your 1-point to your 3-point and you then toss a 5-5, you can play six/one six/one eight/three eight/three. Your challenger is then in serious dire straits seeing that they have 2 checkers on the bar and you have locked half your home board!

The Backgame

This plan is where you have 2 or more anchors in your competitor’s inner board. (An anchor is a position consisting of at a minimum two of your checkers.) It would be employed when you are significantly behind as it greatly improves your circumstances. The best locations for anchors are close to your opponent’s lower points and either on abutting points or with a single point separating them. Timing is important for an effective backgame: besides, there is no point having two nice anchor spots and a complete wall in your own inner board if you are then forced to break down this straight away, while your opponent is getting their checkers home, considering that you do not have any other spare checkers to move! In this situation, it is better to have checkers on the bar so that you might maintain your position up till your competitor gives you a chance to hit, so it will be an excellent idea to try and get your opponent to get them in this situation!
