In exceptionally general terms, there are three basic techniques used. You need to be able to switch tactics quickly as the course of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This is composed of building a 6-thick wall of pieces, or at a minimum as thick as you might achieve, to barricade in the opponent’s pieces that are located on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most suitable strategy at the begining of the match. You can assemble the wall anyplace within your eleven-point and your two-point and then move it into your home board as the game continues.

The Blitz

This consists of closing your home board as fast as possible while keeping your opponent on the bar. e.g., if your challenger tosses an early 2 and moves one checker from your 1-point to your three-point and you then roll a five-five, you can play six/one six/one 8/3 eight/three. Your opposer is now in serious calamity because they have two pieces on the bar and you have closed half your inside board!

The Backgame

This strategy is where you have two or higher checkers in your opponent’s home board. (An anchor is a position filled by at least two of your pieces.) It must be employed when you are significantly behind as it greatly improves your chances. The better areas for anchors are towards your competitor’s smaller points and either on adjoining points or with a single point in between. Timing is integral for a powerful backgame: at the end of the day, there is no point having two nice anchors and a complete wall in your own inner board if you are then forced to break apart this right away, while your opponent is moving their pieces home, seeing that you do not have any other additional pieces to shift! In this situation, it’s better to have checkers on the bar so that you are able to maintain your position up till your opposer gives you an opportunity to hit, so it will be an excellent idea to attempt and get your opponent to hit them in this case!
