In exceptionally general terms, there are 3 main plans used. You want to be agile enough to hop between strategies quickly as the action of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This involves assembling a 6-thick wall of checkers, or at a minimum as thick as you might achieve, to barricade in your competitor’s checkers that are on your 1-point. This is considered to be the most adequate tactic at the start of the game. You can build the wall anywhere between your eleven-point and your 2-point and then shuffle it into your home board as the match progresses.

The Blitz

This involves closing your home board as quickly as possible while keeping your opponent on the bar. e.g., if your challenger tosses an early two and moves one checker from your 1-point to your 3-point and you then roll a five-five, you will be able to play 6/1 six/one eight/three eight/three. Your competitor is now in serious dire straits because they have 2 checkers on the bar and you have locked half your inner board!

The Backgame

This strategy is where you have 2 or more anchors in your competitor’s inner board. (An anchor is a point consisting of at a minimum 2 of your pieces.) It must be used when you are decidedly behind as this action much improves your chances. The strongest places for anchors are near your competitor’s smaller points and also on adjoining points or with one point separating them. Timing is crucial for a powerful backgame: besides, there’s no reason having 2 nice anchors and a complete wall in your own home board if you are then required to break down this right away, while your opponent is moving their checkers home, because you don’t have any other additional pieces to shift! In this situation, it’s more tolerable to have checkers on the bar so that you can preserve your position up till your challenger gives you an opportunity to hit, so it will be a wonderful idea to attempt and get your challenger to hit them in this situation!
