In very simple terms, there are three general techniques employed. You need to be agile enough to hop between game plans instantly as the course of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This consists of assembling a 6-deep wall of pieces, or at a minimum as deep as you can manage, to barricade in your competitor’s pieces that are on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most adequate strategy at the begining of the game. You can build the wall anyplace within your eleven-point and your 2-point and then shift it into your home board as the game progresses.

The Blitz

This is comprised of closing your home board as quickly as possible while keeping your competitor on the bar. i.e., if your opposer rolls an early 2 and moves one checker from your one-point to your 3-point and you then roll a 5-5, you are able to play 6/1 six/one 8/3 8/3. Your opponent is now in serious trouble taking into account that they have two checkers on the bar and you have locked half your inside board!

The Backgame

This plan is where you have two or higher pieces in your opponent’s inner board. (An anchor spot is a point consisting of at a minimum 2 of your pieces.) It needs to be used when you are extremely behind as it greatly improves your circumstances. The strongest places for anchors are towards your competitor’s smaller points and also on adjacent points or with a single point separating them. Timing is crucial for a competent backgame: at the end of the day, there’s no point having 2 nice anchor spots and a solid wall in your own home board if you are then required to break apart this right away, while your opposer is getting their pieces home, considering that you don’t have any other additional pieces to move! In this case, it is more favorable to have pieces on the bar so that you are able to maintain your position up till your opposer provides you an opportunity to hit, so it will be a good idea to try and get your competitor to hit them in this case!
