In extraordinarily general terms, there are three main strategies used. You must be agile enough to switch strategies instantly as the action of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This consists of building a 6-deep wall of pieces, or at least as deep as you can achieve, to lock in the competitor’s checkers that are on your 1-point. This is judged to be the most adequate procedure at the start of the match. You can build the wall anyplace inbetween your 11-point and your 2-point and then shuffle it into your home board as the match advances.

The Blitz

This involves locking your home board as fast as possible while keeping your competitor on the bar. i.e., if your competitor tosses an early two and moves one piece from your one-point to your 3-point and you then roll a 5-5, you can play 6/1 6/1 eight/three eight/three. Your opponent is now in big-time difficulty taking into account that they have 2 pieces on the bar and you have closed half your inner board!

The Backgame

This course of action is where you have two or higher pieces in your competitor’s home board. (An anchor is a point occupied by at least two of your pieces.) It needs to be used when you are decidedly behind as this plan much improves your circumstances. The strongest locations for anchor spots are near your opponent’s lower points and either on adjoining points or with a single point in between. Timing is crucial for a competent backgame: besides, there is no reason having 2 nice anchor spots and a solid wall in your own inner board if you are then required to break down this straight away, while your opposer is moving their checkers home, seeing that you do not have any other additional pieces to move! In this situation, it’s more tolerable to have checkers on the bar so that you are able to maintain your position until your opponent gives you an opportunity to hit, so it may be a great idea to try and get your opponent to hit them in this situation!
