In exceptionally general terms, there are 3 chief plans employed. You must be agile enough to hop between tactics almost instantly as the course of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This involves creating a 6-thick wall of pieces, or at a minimum as thick as you can achieve, to lock in your opponent’s checkers that are on your 1-point. This is considered to be the most acceptable strategy at the start of the game. You can assemble the wall anyplace inbetween your 11-point and your 2-point and then move it into your home board as the game advances.

The Blitz

This is composed of closing your home board as fast as possible while keeping your opposer on the bar. For example, if your competitor rolls an early 2 and shifts one checker from your 1-point to your 3-point and you then roll a 5-5, you can play 6/1 six/one eight/three 8/3. Your opponent is now in serious trouble taking into account that they have 2 checkers on the bar and you have locked half your inner board!

The Backgame

This plan is where you have two or more pieces in your competitor’s home board. (An anchor spot is a point consisting of at a minimum 2 of your pieces.) It should be played when you are significantly behind as this strategy much improves your chances. The better locations for anchor spots are close to your competitor’s lower points and either on adjacent points or with a single point separating them. Timing is critical for a powerful backgame: after all, there’s no reason having two nice anchors and a solid wall in your own home board if you are then required to dismantle this straight away, while your challenger is shifting their pieces home, because you don’t have other additional checkers to move! In this case, it is better to have pieces on the bar so that you are able to maintain your position up till your opposer provides you an opportunity to hit, so it may be an excellent idea to attempt and get your competitor to get them in this situation!
