In very general terms, there are 3 chief game plans employed. You need to be able to switch techniques quickly as the action of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This is composed of building a 6-thick wall of pieces, or at least as thick as you are able to manage, to lock in the competitor’s checkers that are on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most suitable tactic at the start of the game. You can assemble the wall anywhere between your 11-point and your 2-point and then move it into your home board as the match continues.

The Blitz

This is comprised of locking your home board as quick as as you can while keeping your challenger on the bar. For example, if your opponent tosses an early 2 and moves one piece from your one-point to your three-point and you then roll a five-five, you are able to play 6/1 six/one 8/3 8/3. Your opposer is now in big-time difficulty considering that they have 2 checkers on the bar and you have closed half your inner board!

The Backgame

This strategy is where you have 2 or more anchors in your opponent’s home board. (An anchor spot is a position consisting of at a minimum two of your pieces.) It must be employed when you are extremely behind as this action greatly improves your chances. The better locations for anchors are near your opponent’s smaller points and also on adjacent points or with one point in between. Timing is integral for an effective backgame: at the end of the day, there’s no point having 2 nice anchors and a solid wall in your own inner board if you are then forced to break up this straight away, while your opponent is shifting their pieces home, seeing that you do not have any other spare checkers to shift! In this situation, it’s more favorable to have checkers on the bar so that you might maintain your position up till your competitor provides you an opportunity to hit, so it will be a great idea to attempt and get your challenger to get them in this case!
