In astonishingly simple terms, there are 3 general tactics employed. You must be able to switch tactics instantly as the action of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This comprises of creating a 6-thick wall of pieces, or at least as deep as you are able to achieve, to block in your competitor’s checkers that are located on your 1-point. This is judged to be the most suitable procedure at the begining of the match. You can assemble the wall anywhere within your 11-point and your two-point and then shuffle it into your home board as the game progresses.

The Blitz

This involves locking your home board as quick as as you can while keeping your opponent on the bar. i.e., if your competitor tosses an early 2 and moves one piece from your one-point to your three-point and you then roll a 5-5, you can play 6/1 6/1 8/3 eight/three. Your challenger is then in big-time dire straits since they have 2 pieces on the bar and you have locked half your inside board!

The Backgame

This course of action is where you have 2 or higher pieces in your competitor’s inner board. (An anchor is a point occupied by at least two of your checkers.) It needs to be employed when you are decidedly behind as this strategy much improves your opportunities. The strongest areas for anchor spots are towards your competitor’s lower points and either on adjacent points or with a single point in between. Timing is important for an effectual backgame: besides, there is no reason having 2 nice anchor spots and a solid wall in your own home board if you are then required to dismantle this straight away, while your competitor is getting their pieces home, owing to the fact that you do not have other spare pieces to shift! In this situation, it is more favorable to have pieces on the bar so that you can maintain your position until your opposer provides you a chance to hit, so it can be a great idea to attempt and get your opponent to get them in this case!
