In astonishingly simple terms, there are three chief strategies employed. You want to be agile enough to hop between strategies quickly as the action of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This involves assembling a 6-deep wall of pieces, or at a minimum as deep as you are able to achieve, to block in the competitor’s pieces that are on your 1-point. This is considered to be the most adequate tactic at the start of the game. You can assemble the wall anywhere inbetween your 11-point and your two-point and then shuffle it into your home board as the match advances.

The Blitz

This involves closing your home board as quickly as possible while keeping your competitor on the bar. i.e., if your opposer rolls an early two and moves one piece from your 1-point to your 3-point and you then toss a five-five, you can play six/one six/one 8/3 8/3. Your challenger is now in big-time dire straits because they have two checkers on the bar and you have locked half your home board!

The Backgame

This strategy is where you have 2 or more checkers in your competitor’s home board. (An anchor spot is a position occupied by at least 2 of your pieces.) It would be used when you are significantly behind as this action much improves your opportunities. The better areas for anchor spots are towards your competitor’s smaller points and either on adjacent points or with one point in between. Timing is essential for an effectual backgame: at the end of the day, there is no point having two nice anchors and a complete wall in your own inner board if you are then forced to break down this straight away, while your opposer is shifting their checkers home, seeing that you don’t have any other additional checkers to move! In this situation, it is more favorable to have pieces on the bar so that you can maintain your position up till your challenger gives you an opportunity to hit, so it may be a great idea to try and get your competitor to hit them in this situation!
