In astonishingly simple terms, there are 3 chief strategies employed. You need to be able to switch tactics quickly as the course of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This involves creating a 6-deep wall of checkers, or at least as deep as you might achieve, to barricade in the competitor’s checkers that are on your 1-point. This is considered to be the most adequate procedure at the start of the match. You can create the wall anywhere within your 11-point and your two-point and then shift it into your home board as the game progresses.

The Blitz

This is composed of locking your home board as fast as as you can while keeping your competitor on the bar. For example, if your competitor tosses an early 2 and shifts one checker from your 1-point to your 3-point and you then toss a five-five, you are able to play six/one six/one eight/three eight/three. Your opposer is then in serious dire straits due to the fact that they have two pieces on the bar and you have closed half your home board!

The Backgame

This strategy is where you have two or higher checkers in your competitor’s inner board. (An anchor spot is a position consisting of at a minimum two of your pieces.) It would be used when you are extremely behind as this action much improves your chances. The best areas for anchor spots are near your competitor’s smaller points and also on adjoining points or with one point in between. Timing is critical for a powerful backgame: at the end of the day, there is no point having two nice anchor spots and a solid wall in your own home board if you are then forced to break apart this right away, while your challenger is moving their pieces home, considering that you don’t have other spare pieces to move! In this case, it’s better to have checkers on the bar so that you might maintain your position until your opponent provides you a chance to hit, so it may be a good idea to attempt and get your competitor to get them in this situation!
