In very general terms, there are three general techniques used. You want to be able to hop between techniques quickly as the action of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This involves building a 6-deep wall of pieces, or at least as deep as you might manage, to lock in your competitor’s pieces that are on your 1-point. This is judged to be the most adequate strategy at the begining of the game. You can create the wall anyplace inbetween your 11-point and your 2-point and then shuffle it into your home board as the game advances.

The Blitz

This involves closing your home board as quick as possible while keeping your challenger on the bar. For example, if your opponent tosses an early two and moves one piece from your one-point to your three-point and you then roll a five-five, you can play 6/1 6/1 eight/three 8/3. Your competitor is now in big-time difficulty taking into account that they have 2 checkers on the bar and you have locked half your home board!

The Backgame

This tactic is where you have 2 or more pieces in your opponent’s home board. (An anchor is a position occupied by at a minimum two of your pieces.) It would be employed when you are extremely behind as this plan greatly improves your opportunities. The best areas for anchor spots are near your competitor’s lower points and either on adjoining points or with a single point separating them. Timing is critical for an effective backgame: after all, there is no reason having 2 nice anchors and a complete wall in your own home board if you are then forced to break apart this right away, while your opponent is getting their checkers home, owing to the fact that you do not have any other additional pieces to move! In this situation, it is more favorable to have pieces on the bar so that you might maintain your position up till your competitor provides you an opportunity to hit, so it will be a good idea to attempt and get your opponent to hit them in this case!
