In astonishingly simple terms, there are 3 main plans used. You want to be able to hop between techniques instantly as the action of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This is composed of assembling a 6-deep wall of checkers, or at least as thick as you might achieve, to lock in the competitor’s pieces that are located on your 1-point. This is judged to be the most acceptable procedure at the start of the match. You can assemble the wall anywhere within your 11-point and your 2-point and then shuffle it into your home board as the match progresses.

The Blitz

This involves locking your home board as quickly as as you can while keeping your opposer on the bar. For example, if your challenger tosses an early 2 and shifts one piece from your one-point to your three-point and you then toss a 5-5, you are able to play 6/1 six/one 8/3 8/3. Your opponent is now in big-time difficulty because they have 2 checkers on the bar and you have closed half your home board!

The Backgame

This plan is where you have two or higher checkers in your competitor’s inner board. (An anchor is a position occupied by at a minimum two of your pieces.) It must be played when you are decidedly behind as this plan greatly improves your chances. The strongest places for anchor spots are near your competitor’s lower points and also on adjoining points or with a single point in between. Timing is critical for a competent backgame: after all, there is no point having two nice anchors and a solid wall in your own inner board if you are then required to dismantle this right away, while your opposer is moving their checkers home, seeing that you do not have any other additional checkers to shift! In this situation, it is better to have pieces on the bar so that you are able to maintain your position until your competitor gives you an opportunity to hit, so it can be a good idea to try and get your challenger to get them in this case!
