In extraordinarily simple terms, there are three fundamental plans employed. You need to be agile enough to switch game plans quickly as the action of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This comprises of building a 6-thick wall of checkers, or at least as deep as you can achieve, to lock in the opponent’s pieces that are located on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most adequate course of action at the start of the game. You can build the wall anyplace within your eleven-point and your two-point and then shuffle it into your home board as the match progresses.

The Blitz

This involves closing your home board as quickly as possible while keeping your opposer on the bar. For example, if your opponent tosses an early two and moves one piece from your 1-point to your three-point and you then roll a 5-5, you can play 6/1 six/one 8/3 8/3. Your opposer is now in big-time trouble because they have 2 checkers on the bar and you have closed half your inside board!

The Backgame

This plan is where you have 2 or higher pieces in your opponent’s home board. (An anchor spot is a point filled by at least 2 of your pieces.) It must be used when you are significantly behind as it much improves your circumstances. The strongest locations for anchors are towards your opponent’s lower points and either on abutting points or with a single point separating them. Timing is crucial for an effective backgame: after all, there’s no reason having 2 nice anchor spots and a complete wall in your own inner board if you are then forced to break apart this straight away, while your challenger is getting their checkers home, considering that you don’t have other extra checkers to move! In this situation, it is more tolerable to have checkers on the bar so that you are able to preserve your position until your challenger gives you a chance to hit, so it may be an excellent idea to try and get your challenger to hit them in this case!
