In exceptionally general terms, there are 3 main techniques employed. You want to be agile enough to hop between game plans instantly as the course of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This involves assembling a 6-deep wall of checkers, or at least as deep as you might achieve, to lock in the opponent’s pieces that are on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most suitable strategy at the start of the game. You can assemble the wall anywhere within your 11-point and your two-point and then move it into your home board as the match continues.

The Blitz

This is comprised of locking your home board as quick as possible while keeping your competitor on the bar. e.g., if your competitor rolls an early two and moves one piece from your 1-point to your 3-point and you then roll a 5-5, you will be able to play 6/1 six/one 8/3 eight/three. Your opponent is now in big-time dire straits due to the fact that they have 2 checkers on the bar and you have closed half your inside board!

The Backgame

This course of action is where you have 2 or more pieces in your opponent’s inner board. (An anchor spot is a position filled by at a minimum 2 of your checkers.) It must be used when you are significantly behind as it greatly improves your opportunities. The strongest areas for anchors are near your competitor’s smaller points and also on adjoining points or with one point in between. Timing is important for an effective backgame: at the end of the day, there is no reason having 2 nice anchor spots and a complete wall in your own inner board if you are then required to break up this right away, while your opposer is shifting their pieces home, owing to the fact that you do not have other spare pieces to move! In this situation, it is better to have checkers on the bar so that you can maintain your position up till your opponent gives you an opportunity to hit, so it can be an excellent idea to attempt and get your opponent to hit them in this situation!
