In extraordinarily simple terms, there are 3 basic strategies used. You want to be agile enough to switch game plans instantly as the action of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This involves building a 6-thick wall of pieces, or at a minimum as thick as you are able to achieve, to block in your competitor’s checkers that are located on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most suitable tactic at the start of the match. You can create the wall anyplace within your 11-point and your two-point and then shuffle it into your home board as the game advances.

The Blitz

This is comprised of closing your home board as fast as possible while keeping your opposer on the bar. e.g., if your opposer rolls an early 2 and shifts one piece from your one-point to your three-point and you then toss a five-five, you will be able to play 6/1 six/one eight/three eight/three. Your competitor is then in big-time difficulty due to the fact that they have two checkers on the bar and you have locked half your inner board!

The Backgame

This tactic is where you have two or higher anchors in your competitor’s inner board. (An anchor spot is a point consisting of at a minimum 2 of your pieces.) It would be played when you are extremely behind as this plan much improves your opportunities. The best areas for anchor spots are near your opponent’s lower points and either on abutting points or with a single point in between. Timing is essential for a powerful backgame: at the end of the day, there’s no point having two nice anchor spots and a solid wall in your own inner board if you are then required to break up this straight away, while your opposer is moving their checkers home, seeing that you don’t have other extra pieces to shift! In this case, it is more tolerable to have pieces on the bar so that you can preserve your position up until your challenger gives you an opportunity to hit, so it may be a good idea to try and get your competitor to get them in this situation!
