In extraordinarily general terms, there are 3 fundamental plans used. You want to be able to hop between tactics instantly as the course of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This consists of creating a 6-thick wall of pieces, or at a minimum as deep as you are able to manage, to lock in your opponent’s pieces that are on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most adequate strategy at the start of the match. You can assemble the wall anywhere within your 11-point and your 2-point and then shuffle it into your home board as the match advances.

The Blitz

This consists of locking your home board as quick as possible while keeping your competitor on the bar. For example, if your challenger rolls an early 2 and shifts one checker from your 1-point to your three-point and you then toss a five-five, you can play 6/1 six/one 8/3 eight/three. Your opponent is then in big-time dire straits since they have 2 pieces on the bar and you have locked half your home board!

The Backgame

This course of action is where you have 2 or more anchors in your competitor’s home board. (An anchor spot is a point consisting of at a minimum two of your pieces.) It must be employed when you are decidedly behind as this strategy greatly improves your opportunities. The better areas for anchors are near your opponent’s lower points and either on abutting points or with one point in between. Timing is critical for a powerful backgame: besides, there is no reason having two nice anchors and a solid wall in your own inner board if you are then forced to break apart this straight away, while your challenger is moving their checkers home, considering that you do not have any other additional checkers to shift! In this situation, it’s better to have checkers on the bar so that you are able to preserve your position until your competitor gives you an opportunity to hit, so it can be a good idea to attempt and get your competitor to get them in this situation!
