In very general terms, there are 3 general strategies employed. You must be able to switch tactics instantly as the action of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This consists of creating a 6-thick wall of pieces, or at a minimum as thick as you are able to achieve, to barricade in your opponent’s checkers that are on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most acceptable strategy at the begining of the match. You can build the wall anywhere between your eleven-point and your two-point and then move it into your home board as the game continues.

The Blitz

This is composed of locking your home board as fast as possible while keeping your challenger on the bar. e.g., if your opponent tosses an early 2 and shifts one checker from your 1-point to your 3-point and you then toss a five-five, you can play six/one 6/1 eight/three eight/three. Your competitor is now in big-time difficulty because they have 2 checkers on the bar and you have closed half your home board!

The Backgame

This strategy is where you have two or higher anchors in your competitor’s home board. (An anchor spot is a point filled by at least two of your checkers.) It should be employed when you are significantly behind as it greatly improves your opportunities. The better areas for anchor spots are close to your opponent’s lower points and either on adjoining points or with a single point in between. Timing is crucial for a competent backgame: at the end of the day, there is no reason having two nice anchor spots and a solid wall in your own inner board if you are then forced to dismantle this right away, while your opponent is shifting their checkers home, considering that you don’t have other additional pieces to move! In this case, it’s more favorable to have checkers on the bar so that you might preserve your position up till your opposer provides you a chance to hit, so it will be an excellent idea to try and get your challenger to hit them in this situation!
