In astonishingly simple terms, there are three main game plans employed. You must be agile enough to hop between tactics almost instantly as the course of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This is composed of creating a 6-deep wall of checkers, or at a minimum as deep as you can manage, to block in the competitor’s pieces that are on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most adequate course of action at the start of the game. You can create the wall anyplace within your eleven-point and your 2-point and then move it into your home board as the game continues.

The Blitz

This consists of closing your home board as fast as possible while keeping your opposer on the bar. i.e., if your challenger tosses an early two and moves one piece from your one-point to your three-point and you then toss a five-five, you are able to play 6/1 6/1 eight/three eight/three. Your opposer is then in big-time difficulty because they have two checkers on the bar and you have locked half your home board!

The Backgame

This course of action is where you have two or more anchors in your opponent’s home board. (An anchor spot is a position consisting of at least 2 of your pieces.) It would be used when you are significantly behind as this action much improves your opportunities. The better places for anchors are near your competitor’s smaller points and either on abutting points or with one point separating them. Timing is critical for an effective backgame: after all, there is no point having two nice anchor spots and a solid wall in your own home board if you are then forced to break apart this straight away, while your challenger is moving their checkers home, seeing that you do not have any other additional checkers to move! In this case, it’s better to have pieces on the bar so that you can preserve your position up until your challenger gives you an opportunity to hit, so it will be an excellent idea to attempt and get your opponent to hit them in this case!
