In extraordinarily simple terms, there are three chief strategies employed. You must be able to hop between game plans almost instantly as the course of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This is comprised of creating a 6-thick wall of checkers, or at a minimum as thick as you are able to manage, to barricade in your competitor’s pieces that are on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most suitable procedure at the begining of the game. You can assemble the wall anywhere within your 11-point and your two-point and then shift it into your home board as the match progresses.

The Blitz

This consists of locking your home board as quickly as possible while keeping your opposer on the bar. e.g., if your opposer rolls an early two and shifts one checker from your 1-point to your three-point and you then toss a 5-5, you are able to play six/one 6/1 8/3 eight/three. Your opposer is then in big-time dire straits because they have two checkers on the bar and you have closed half your inner board!

The Backgame

This tactic is where you have 2 or more anchors in your opponent’s inner board. (An anchor spot is a point occupied by at a minimum 2 of your checkers.) It must be used when you are significantly behind as it greatly improves your circumstances. The strongest locations for anchors are close to your opponent’s smaller points and also on abutting points or with one point in between. Timing is crucial for a powerful backgame: after all, there’s no reason having two nice anchor spots and a solid wall in your own home board if you are then required to dismantle this right away, while your opponent is moving their checkers home, because you do not have other spare pieces to shift! In this case, it’s more tolerable to have checkers on the bar so that you are able to maintain your position up until your opposer gives you an opportunity to hit, so it may be a wonderful idea to attempt and get your challenger to get them in this case!
