In astonishingly general terms, there are 3 chief tactics used. You must be able to switch strategies almost instantly as the course of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This is comprised of assembling a 6-deep wall of checkers, or at a minimum as deep as you can achieve, to barricade in the opponent’s pieces that are located on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most adequate course of action at the begining of the match. You can build the wall anyplace between your 11-point and your two-point and then move it into your home board as the game progresses.

The Blitz

This consists of locking your home board as quick as possible while keeping your challenger on the bar. e.g., if your opponent tosses an early two and moves one piece from your one-point to your three-point and you then roll a 5-5, you are able to play 6/1 6/1 8/3 8/3. Your competitor is now in big-time trouble because they have two checkers on the bar and you have closed half your inside board!

The Backgame

This tactic is where you have 2 or more pieces in your competitor’s inner board. (An anchor spot is a point occupied by at least two of your pieces.) It should be employed when you are extremely behind as this action much improves your circumstances. The strongest places for anchor spots are close to your competitor’s smaller points and either on abutting points or with a single point separating them. Timing is important for an effectual backgame: besides, there’s no reason having two nice anchor spots and a complete wall in your own home board if you are then required to break up this right away, while your opposer is getting their checkers home, seeing that you do not have other additional checkers to move! In this situation, it is more tolerable to have pieces on the bar so that you might maintain your position until your opponent provides you a chance to hit, so it can be a wonderful idea to attempt and get your challenger to hit them in this situation!
