In exceptionally simple terms, there are three chief techniques employed. You want to be agile enough to hop between strategies instantly as the action of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This involves assembling a 6-deep wall of checkers, or at least as deep as you can achieve, to block in your opponent’s checkers that are on your 1-point. This is considered to be the most suitable course of action at the begining of the game. You can create the wall anyplace inbetween your eleven-point and your 2-point and then move it into your home board as the game continues.

The Blitz

This consists of locking your home board as fast as as you can while keeping your challenger on the bar. e.g., if your challenger rolls an early 2 and shifts one piece from your 1-point to your 3-point and you then roll a 5-5, you are able to play six/one 6/1 eight/three 8/3. Your opponent is then in serious difficulty because they have 2 pieces on the bar and you have locked half your inner board!

The Backgame

This tactic is where you have 2 or more pieces in your opponent’s inner board. (An anchor is a position consisting of at a minimum two of your checkers.) It would be employed when you are extremely behind as this plan much improves your chances. The better places for anchors are close to your competitor’s smaller points and also on abutting points or with a single point separating them. Timing is essential for an effectual backgame: after all, there’s no point having two nice anchor spots and a complete wall in your own home board if you are then forced to break down this straight away, while your opponent is shifting their pieces home, taking into account that you do not have any other spare checkers to shift! In this case, it’s more tolerable to have checkers on the bar so that you are able to preserve your position up until your opponent gives you an opportunity to hit, so it can be a good idea to try and get your challenger to hit them in this situation!
