In extraordinarily general terms, there are three general techniques used. You need to be able to hop between strategies quickly as the course of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This is composed of creating a 6-deep wall of checkers, or at a minimum as thick as you might achieve, to block in your opponent’s checkers that are on your 1-point. This is judged to be the most suitable course of action at the start of the game. You can build the wall anyplace within your 11-point and your two-point and then move it into your home board as the match progresses.

The Blitz

This consists of locking your home board as quick as as you can while keeping your opposer on the bar. For example, if your opponent tosses an early 2 and moves one piece from your one-point to your three-point and you then toss a five-five, you are able to play 6/1 6/1 8/3 eight/three. Your opposer is then in serious calamity considering that they have 2 checkers on the bar and you have locked half your home board!

The Backgame

This plan is where you have two or higher anchors in your competitor’s inner board. (An anchor is a point filled by at least two of your checkers.) It needs to be employed when you are extremely behind as this plan greatly improves your circumstances. The better areas for anchor spots are close to your competitor’s lower points and either on abutting points or with a single point in between. Timing is critical for a competent backgame: besides, there is no reason having two nice anchor spots and a solid wall in your own inner board if you are then forced to break down this right away, while your opponent is getting their pieces home, because you don’t have any other extra pieces to shift! In this case, it is more favorable to have pieces on the bar so that you are able to maintain your position until your opposer provides you an opportunity to hit, so it can be a great idea to try and get your competitor to hit them in this case!
