In very simple terms, there are three main plans employed. You want to be agile enough to hop between strategies instantly as the course of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This is comprised of building a 6-deep wall of pieces, or at a minimum as thick as you can manage, to lock in your competitor’s pieces that are on your 1-point. This is considered to be the most suitable tactic at the start of the game. You can create the wall anyplace between your eleven-point and your two-point and then shuffle it into your home board as the match continues.

The Blitz

This consists of closing your home board as quickly as as you can while keeping your opponent on the bar. e.g., if your opposer rolls an early two and moves one checker from your one-point to your 3-point and you then toss a five-five, you will be able to play six/one 6/1 eight/three eight/three. Your opponent is now in serious calamity taking into account that they have 2 checkers on the bar and you have closed half your inner board!

The Backgame

This course of action is where you have two or higher anchors in your opponent’s home board. (An anchor is a point consisting of at a minimum two of your pieces.) It must be employed when you are extremely behind as it much improves your circumstances. The strongest places for anchors are near your opponent’s smaller points and also on adjacent points or with one point separating them. Timing is crucial for an effective backgame: besides, there is no point having two nice anchors and a solid wall in your own inner board if you are then forced to break up this right away, while your challenger is moving their pieces home, because you don’t have other spare pieces to move! In this situation, it’s better to have checkers on the bar so that you are able to preserve your position up until your opponent provides you an opportunity to hit, so it may be a good idea to try and get your opposer to hit them in this case!
