In astonishingly simple terms, there are 3 basic techniques used. You need to be agile enough to hop between tactics instantly as the action of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This is composed of assembling a 6-deep wall of checkers, or at a minimum as thick as you can achieve, to block in your competitor’s pieces that are on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most suitable course of action at the begining of the game. You can assemble the wall anyplace between your 11-point and your two-point and then move it into your home board as the game advances.

The Blitz

This is comprised of closing your home board as quickly as as you can while keeping your competitor on the bar. For example, if your competitor rolls an early 2 and moves one piece from your 1-point to your three-point and you then toss a five-five, you are able to play 6/1 six/one eight/three eight/three. Your opposer is now in serious trouble taking into account that they have 2 checkers on the bar and you have closed half your inside board!

The Backgame

This strategy is where you have 2 or more pieces in your opponent’s inner board. (An anchor is a point filled by at a minimum two of your pieces.) It should be played when you are decidedly behind as it much improves your chances. The best areas for anchors are towards your opponent’s lower points and also on abutting points or with a single point in between. Timing is integral for a competent backgame: after all, there’s no reason having two nice anchor spots and a complete wall in your own inner board if you are then forced to break up this right away, while your challenger is getting their checkers home, considering that you do not have any other extra checkers to shift! In this situation, it’s better to have checkers on the bar so that you might preserve your position until your opposer provides you an opportunity to hit, so it will be a great idea to try and get your challenger to get them in this situation!
