In extraordinarily general terms, there are three general plans used. You want to be agile enough to switch techniques quickly as the course of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This involves creating a 6-deep wall of pieces, or at a minimum as deep as you might achieve, to barricade in your competitor’s checkers that are located on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most suitable course of action at the begining of the match. You can create the wall anywhere between your 11-point and your two-point and then shuffle it into your home board as the game advances.

The Blitz

This is composed of locking your home board as quick as as you can while keeping your opponent on the bar. e.g., if your challenger tosses an early 2 and moves one piece from your one-point to your 3-point and you then toss a 5-5, you can play six/one 6/1 8/3 eight/three. Your challenger is then in big-time difficulty seeing that they have two pieces on the bar and you have locked half your inner board!

The Backgame

This plan is where you have 2 or more anchors in your opponent’s inner board. (An anchor is a position occupied by at a minimum 2 of your checkers.) It must be employed when you are significantly behind as this plan greatly improves your chances. The strongest locations for anchor spots are near your opponent’s lower points and also on abutting points or with one point in between. Timing is crucial for a competent backgame: besides, there is no point having 2 nice anchor spots and a solid wall in your own home board if you are then forced to break apart this straight away, while your competitor is moving their pieces home, because you don’t have any other extra pieces to move! In this situation, it is more favorable to have checkers on the bar so that you are able to preserve your position up until your competitor provides you a chance to hit, so it will be a great idea to attempt and get your opposer to get them in this situation!
