In exceptionally general terms, there are 3 basic techniques used. You need to be able to hop between strategies almost instantly as the course of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This consists of building a 6-deep wall of pieces, or at least as deep as you are able to achieve, to block in your opponent’s checkers that are on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most suitable course of action at the begining of the game. You can build the wall anyplace between your eleven-point and your 2-point and then shift it into your home board as the match progresses.

The Blitz

This involves closing your home board as quick as as you can while keeping your opponent on the bar. For example, if your competitor tosses an early 2 and shifts one checker from your 1-point to your 3-point and you then toss a five-five, you will be able to play six/one 6/1 eight/three eight/three. Your opponent is then in serious trouble taking into account that they have 2 checkers on the bar and you have locked half your inner board!

The Backgame

This course of action is where you have 2 or more pieces in your competitor’s inner board. (An anchor spot is a point consisting of at least 2 of your pieces.) It would be played when you are significantly behind as it much improves your opportunities. The best areas for anchor spots are near your competitor’s smaller points and also on abutting points or with a single point separating them. Timing is integral for an effective backgame: besides, there’s no point having 2 nice anchor spots and a complete wall in your own inner board if you are then required to break down this right away, while your competitor is getting their pieces home, owing to the fact that you don’t have any other additional checkers to shift! In this situation, it’s more favorable to have pieces on the bar so that you are able to preserve your position up till your competitor gives you an opportunity to hit, so it may be a good idea to try and get your opposer to get them in this case!
