In exceptionally simple terms, there are 3 chief techniques used. You must be agile enough to hop between tactics quickly as the action of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This involves creating a 6-deep wall of pieces, or at least as thick as you are able to manage, to block in your opponent’s pieces that are on your 1-point. This is considered to be the most adequate strategy at the begining of the game. You can create the wall anyplace inbetween your eleven-point and your two-point and then shift it into your home board as the game advances.

The Blitz

This is comprised of locking your home board as quick as as you can while keeping your challenger on the bar. i.e., if your opposer tosses an early 2 and shifts one checker from your one-point to your 3-point and you then toss a five-five, you are able to play 6/1 six/one 8/3 8/3. Your challenger is now in big-time difficulty taking into account that they have 2 pieces on the bar and you have locked half your inner board!

The Backgame

This strategy is where you have two or more pieces in your opponent’s inner board. (An anchor spot is a point consisting of at least 2 of your checkers.) It must be employed when you are extremely behind as it much improves your chances. The strongest locations for anchors are towards your competitor’s lower points and also on abutting points or with a single point separating them. Timing is important for a competent backgame: after all, there is no point having 2 nice anchor spots and a complete wall in your own inner board if you are then forced to break down this right away, while your opponent is shifting their checkers home, considering that you don’t have other additional checkers to move! In this case, it’s more tolerable to have checkers on the bar so that you might preserve your position up till your challenger provides you a chance to hit, so it can be a good idea to attempt and get your opposer to hit them in this situation!
