In very simple terms, there are three basic tactics used. You need to be able to hop between game plans almost instantly as the course of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This is composed of building a 6-thick wall of checkers, or at least as deep as you are able to achieve, to block in the opponent’s checkers that are on your 1-point. This is judged to be the most suitable tactic at the begining of the game. You can create the wall anywhere within your 11-point and your two-point and then shuffle it into your home board as the match continues.

The Blitz

This involves closing your home board as quick as possible while keeping your competitor on the bar. i.e., if your opponent rolls an early 2 and shifts one piece from your 1-point to your 3-point and you then toss a 5-5, you will be able to play 6/1 6/1 8/3 eight/three. Your competitor is then in serious calamity since they have 2 checkers on the bar and you have locked half your inner board!

The Backgame

This tactic is where you have two or more checkers in your opponent’s home board. (An anchor is a position consisting of at least two of your checkers.) It should be employed when you are significantly behind as this plan greatly improves your circumstances. The strongest places for anchors are near your competitor’s lower points and either on adjoining points or with one point in between. Timing is essential for an effectual backgame: besides, there is no point having 2 nice anchor spots and a complete wall in your own inner board if you are then forced to break up this straight away, while your opposer is moving their pieces home, owing to the fact that you don’t have any other spare pieces to shift! In this situation, it’s better to have checkers on the bar so that you can preserve your position until your challenger provides you an opportunity to hit, so it may be a great idea to try and get your opposer to get them in this situation!
